SERIAL NUMBER IDENTIFICATION

Vehicle

EXCEPT RX-7

The serial number (otherwise known as a Vehicle Identification Number or VIN) is stamped on a plate located on the driver's side windshield pillar, and is visible through the glass.

A plate, bearing the Vehicle Identification Number and other data, is attached to the cowl at the rear of the engine compartment.

RX-7

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is located on a plate attached to the upper left hand corner of the instrument panel, and is visible through the windshield.

The model plate and the chassis number are located on the right and left sides of the underhood firewall, respectively, on the 1979 model. On the 1980-89 RX-7, both the model plate and the chassis number are located on the right side of the underhood firewall.

The motor vehicle safety certification label indicates that the vehicle has passed all safety requirements in force at the time of manufacture and is located on the driver's side door jamb.

Engine

EXCEPT RX-7

On piston engines through 1981, the serial number and engine type code are located on a plate mounted at the right front, top of the block, except for the GLC type TC engine, which has the plate on the front of the cylinder head. On 1982-89 models, the engine number is located on a machined pad extending from the cylinder block, just below the No. 1 spark plug (between the distributor and the alternator).

RX-7

The engine identification number is stamped on the front of the engine between the distributor (or crank angle sensor on later engines) and the alternator.
